Abstract

These letters from Elizabeth Montagu to James Beattie, never published in full before, were transcribed and annotated by the General Editors of the Elizabeth Montagu Correspondence Online (EMCO) project. The originals are at the University of Aberdeen, Special Collections, MS 30: "James Beattie, Professor of Moral Philosophy and Logic, Poet, Essayist and Moral Philosopher: Papers." The correspondence is described in the archives catalog online. This edition is an online supplement to "'The Commerce of Life': Elizabeth Montagu (1718–1800)," ed. Nicole Pohl, special issue, Huntington Library Quarterly 81, no. 4 (Winter 2018), http://muse.jhu.edu/issue/39838/print. An essay by Caroline Franklin analyzing the Montagu–Beattie correspondence, "An Honorable Alliance: The Friendship between James Beattie and Elizabeth Montagu, as Revealed by Her Letters," is published in that issue at http://muse.jhu.edu/article/717017.
