Abstract

The effect of alpha irradiation on self-diffusion in lead was studied at such temperatures that the radioinduced defects are sufficiently mobile to be measurable. The strong absorption of the alpha recoil beams was used for the determination of the diffusion velocity. The results showed that an exact determination of the diffusion under alpha irradiation was not possible as the surface of the diffusion probe was often chemically altered. However, it was determined that the increased diffusion velocity observed for short-time irradiation decreased with time.
