Abstract

The revealed comparative advantage (RCA) index is used for calculating the international competitiveness level of a country by using relative export performance of the country and world export variables. It is stated that a country has comparative advantage if RCA>1.On the contrary. If RCA is less than unity, the country is said to have a comparative disadvantage. The aim of this study is to calculate RCA index for leading trading sector (Steel, iron and non-ferrous metals, electrical service, clothing and apparel, chemicals and chemical products, Mining Machinery and accessories, furniture, paper and forest products, fisheries, and animal products, and textile and raw materials) for Denizli by using Denizli and Turkey’s export volume. These sectors constitutes %95 percent of total Denizli exports. As a result this study will detect the competitiveness level of the sectors in Denizli at national level

Introduction

Ulusal ve uluslararası pazarlarda geliri ve toplumsal refahı artırmanın en önemli yolu firmaların ve ülkelerin rekabetçiliğinin artmasından geçmektedir. Yaygın olarak ülkelerin sektörel ihracat performanslarının rekabetçilik düzeyini ölçmede kullanılan AKÜ indeksi ile bu çalışmada farklı olarak Denizli ilinin toplam ihracatının %95’ini oluşturan sektörlerin (Çelik, Demir ve Demir dışı Metaller, Elektrik Elektronik Hizmet,Hazır Giyim ve Konfeksiyon, Kimyevi Maddeler ve Mamulleri, Madencilik, Makine ve Aksamları, Mobilya Kağıt ve Orman Ürünleri, Su Ürünleri ve Hayvansal Mamüller ve Tekstil ve Hammaddeleri) Denizli ili bazında Türkiye toplam ihracatındaki yeri ve rekabetçilik düzeyi hesaplanmıştır. Özdamar ve Albeni (2011) ise çalışmalarında Türkiye ekonomisinde faaliyet gösteren otomotiv sektörünün 1990-2008 dönemi için RCA indeksine göre rekabetçi olduğu sonucuna ulaşmışlardır.
