Abstract

Seismic wave propagation is founded on the principles and laws of classical physics: Hooke’s law relating stress and strain, the theory of elasticity, the principles of conservation of energy and momentum, Newton’s laws of motion, and the wave equation. Some of the greatest physicists and mathematicians have worked on the problems of wave propagation in elastic media, including Lamb, Love, Rayleigh, Stonley, Poisson, Kirchhoff, and Cagniard.
