Abstract

Since 1967 seismic source mechanism studies in the United States have seen the following major developments: 1. Detailed interpretation of fault plane solutions in terms of the new global tectonics.2. Quantitative estimates of the rate of fault slip represented by earthquakes; interpretation of these estimates in terms of the new global tectonics; and use of such estimates to predict earthquake potential.
