Abstract

AbstractThe seismic response of a four-storey asymmetric building with SSI using MR damper with semi-active damping with friction type damping algorithm is studied. The effect of SSI is assessed by comparing the seismic response of a four-storey one-way asymmetric building resting on stiff soil and soft soil with that of the same building considering fixed base case. The optimal damper parameters considering four different ground motions are obtained. The controlled response of the building resting on soft soil is also compared with that of the corresponding uncontrolled symmetric structure to assess the effects of lateral torsional coupling. It is observed from the present study that MR damper with friction type damping scheme could significantly reduce the detrimental effects of SSI and lateral torsional coupling but the reduction in response varies widely with the ground motion considered.KeywordsSeismic responseAsymmetricSoil structure interactionSemi-active damper
