Abstract

This paper proposes a structural system that prevent low-rise wooden buildings from soft-story mechanisms under strong seismic excitations. The proposed system consists of a pin-supported frame (PSF) and passive energy dissipation devices, which are attached to the building from the outside. The PFS works to reduce the torsional vibration of the building and make the story drift of all the stories uniform, and the passive energy dissipation device further reduce the seismic response. First, the time-history response analysis of two-story asymmetric-plan wooden buildings is carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed system. Then, the prediction formula of the axial force acting on the connection between the main structure and the PSF is derived, and its validity is confirmed by comparing with the result obtained from the time history analysis.
