Abstract

In a single-ship operation, seismic refraction data were obtained as part of South Africa's contribution to the International Indian Ocean Expedition. Seismometer signals were recorded in buoys containing tape recorders that were switched on by a radio trigger command from the shooting ship. Results for two profiles, one on the Agulhas bank (35°18′S, 21°30′E) and the other in the Transkei basin (35°27′S, 28°30′E), are reported. At the deep sea station it was found that the structure was very similar to that reported by Ewing, Ludwig, and Ewing for the Argentine basin. In particular, the thickness of the unconsolidated sediment varied between 1.6 and 2.0 km.
