Abstract

Azimuthal variation of P amplitudes from a volcanic earthquake observed at distant stations is interpreted in terms of focusing and defocusing of seismic rays propagating through the low-velocity body around the magma reservoir beneath the region of high crustal activity near the east coast of Izu Peninsula, central Honshu, Japan. Numerical ray tracing was carried out for the models of spherical and cylindrical low velocity bodies.
