Abstract

Future progress in science and technology will primarily come from multidisciplinary research. This does not mean that disciplinary science can be neglected. On the contrary, multidisciplinary research can only be of high quality if excellent disciplinary scientists are involved. However, it does mean that today’s “loose pieces of specialized knowledge” provide relatively little added value. Advancing our knowledge is increasingly about feeding and steering scientific as well as technological research from a system concept. The latter is a prerequisite for coherence of the contributions from the specialists.
