Abstract

The seas came in, the seas went out. This is the most enduring memory that many students have of a course in historical geology. The statement dulls our appreciation of the depositional systems resulting from transgressive and progradational events and leaves us with a static concept of the accumulation of the stratigraphic record. The result is that we are hindered in our exploration efforts aimed at finding the reservoir facies in transgressive and progradational systems, whether they are carbonate or siliciclastic.
