Abstract

Fractal is a theory to describe irregular and heterogeneous natural phenomena and fractal dimension is the measure to characterize this complexity. Fractal dimension of seismic attribute should be more suitable to denote irregular and heterogeneous reservoir, but conventional algorithm of fractal dimension only meets the need of single attribute. In this paper, a new multi‐attributes fractal dimension is introduced for extracting an integrated feature from multiple seismic attribute. The multi‐attributes fractal dimension is the extension of the divider fractal dimension. First we put several weighted seismic attributes together in high dimension space to create a new time series, and then calculate the fractal dimension of the time series by approximating it with a number of straight line sections in an appropriate measure space, such as L2 measure space. Multi‐attributes fractal dimension is a new attribute for seismic attribute analysis, which can extract the reservoir feature from multiple seismic attributes and is expected to give a more reliable result. The algorithm has been applied to identify reef and shoal reservoir in the MX area and the results coincide with well logs.
