Abstract

The vacancy gradient set up by the sharp curvature of the neck between two sintered particles can under favorable conditions produce a considerable segregation in a completely homogenized solid solution. This effect was demonstrated by the precipitate in Cu-In and Cu-Ag alloys occurring in the neck cavity at a higher temperature than indicated by the solvus line and at a lower one than the solidus temperature. These results are supported by the appearance of side peaks and a shift of the peaks of X-ray lines.
