Abstract
To analyze differences in body composition between affected and unaffected extremities using segmental bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) in hemiparetic stroke patients. The segmental BIA results and body composition of 213 hospitalized hemiparetic stroke patients were retrospectively reviewed. Subjects were divided into acute, subacute, and chronic groups according to the period after the onset of stroke. Segmental lean mass (SLM) and segmental body water (SBW) values were compared between affected and unaffected upper and lower extremities in all subjects and in subgroups. The mean differences of body compositions between the affected and unaffected extremities between the three groups were also compared. No significant differences in SLM and SBW values were observed between the affected and unaffected upper and lower extremities in total and in three subgroups. The mean differences in SLM and SBW values between the affected and unaffected upper extremities in the chronic group were larger than those in the acute and subacute groups. There was no significant difference in body composition between affected and unaffected limbs in patients with hemiparetic stroke. The differences in body composition in the affected and unaffected upper extremities in chronic stroke patients were larger than that in acute and subacute stroke patients. Further longitudinal studies are needed.
