Abstract

An unusual cause of small bowel obstruction in the neonate is presented. This rare congenital abnormality consists of segmental absence of the intestinal musculature with intact serosa and mucosa. This report represents the second known case of this abnormality. The etiology of this condition is unknown, and the diagnosis is apparently dependent upon laparotomy, transillumination of the bowel, and microscopic examination of the intestinal wall.
