Abstract

As a cohesive research field within the philosophy of science, philosophy of biology is rather young. Yet, in the last 40 years it has come a long way and it is still vibrant. For a long time it mainly focused on evolutionary theory and genetics, but now the time seems to be ripe for two new developments. First, philosophy of biology is extending its scope and trying to include embryology, anthropology, neuroscience, medicine, ecology, and even agriculture. Second, laws and theories are not so much anymore the main foci of discussion. Philosophy of biology thus takes the same turns philosophy of science generally took: experiments, instruments, models, mechanisms and values take center stage. On the heels of the work accumulated over the last decades, new roads are being taken, as the five new companions and handbooks on philosophy of biology at review here testify. In total, these collections comprise roughly 120 papers. Already this sheer mass attests that the philosophy of biology is sending copious vibes into our post-(modern)-post-(synthesis)-post(genomics) world. It is impossible to comprehensively discuss all these papers in one
