Abstract

Seed production systems for garlic and shallot were developed via the in vitro shoot multiplication technique in either Gamborg's B5 and Shenck and Hildebrandt media (for garlic) or MS (Murashige and Skoog) medium (for shallot), subsequent in vitro bulblet (Go) formation and finally, field production of generation 1 (G 1 ) to generation n (G n ) bulbs. In vitro conservation systems for garlic and shallot were developed via the slow growth technique using Go bulblets in controlled atmosphere. This paper discusses the above techniques for conservation and production of Allium planting materials.
