Abstract
The developmental anatomy of seed and fruit in Gyrocarpus americanus was studied. The fruit is ovoid with two spatulate wings which extend from its distal end. The ripe pericarp is fairly thick with columnar inner epidermis. The mature seed coat is entirely formed by testa. The outer epidermis of the testa consists of somewhat elongated cells in the long axis of the seed. Cells of the inner epidermis elongate radially and their walls are cellulose and unlignified. The raphe bundle undergoes somewhat dichotomous branching in the chalaza. On the basis of seed and fruit anatomy and the available anatomical, cytological, palynological, and ultrastructural data it is concluded that the Hernadiaceae are akin to Lauraceae.
