Abstract

Field, petrographical and mineralogical studies of some Quaternary sediments in the Sherm El Sheikh area show that these sediments are represented by: 1. (1) Lithified resistant beachrocks, coral-algal biolithite and algal biostrome deposited in an intertidal environment along the shore line of the Gulf of Aqaba at Sherm El Moiya. Aragonite, Mg-calcite and microcrystalline dolomite are the main carbonate cements in these rocks. Aragonitic superficial ooid grains occur in the beachrocks. 2. (2) Polymictic conglomerate and cross-bedded sandstone deposited under fluviomarine environment rest non-conformably on the basement rocks at Wadi Khashabi. Micritic superficial ooid grains are a characteristic feature in this sandstone.
