Abstract

The Jambi sub-basin is profilic basin which has been proven to produce hydrocarbon. Talang Akar Formation has become the main target in this basin since many years ago. Further understanding about Talang Akar Formation characteristic would be open a new opportunity of hydrocarbon exploration in this formation. The main purpose of this research is to provide the sedimentological characteristic of Talang Akar Formation particularly in north western part of Jambi sub-basin This research was conducted by integrated sedimentology and biostratigraphy analysis in the chronostratigraphic framework by surface data interpretation of Talang Akar Formation. Outcrop information was collected using standard surface geological mapping and comprehensive measure stratigraphic section and supported by laboratory analysis. The results of this research revealed that Talang Akar Formation in research area is divided into two facies that consist of fluvial system facies and deltaic system facies. Laboratory analysis results show mineralogical composition of this formation is influenced by volcanic fragments. It indicates Barisan Mountain has been emerge during Talang Akar Formation deposition. The occurrence of Barisan Mountain would be affected sediment supply and tectonic setting of Jambi sub-basin in Talang Akar time deposition.
