Abstract

Synopsis A bathymetric, sediment and macrofaunal analysis has been made of the eastern Malin Sea off the west coast of Scotand using shallow seismic, side-scan sonar, and the results from 53 bottom samples. The distributions of the sediment types and the mobile bed-forms which reflect the prevailing hydrodynamic regime are presented in chart form. An assessment of the relative contributions of the shelly macrofauna to the sediment has been made; in addition four major benthonic fauna/associations have been recognized. The quantitative and qualitative details of the bottom fauna are summarized in table form. Total sediment analyses reveal that cool water limestones may be currently forming within the area.
