Abstract

Viburnum species are used in folk medicine because of their diuretic, antispasmodic and sedative properties. In this study the sedative and antispasmodic activities of a total extract from Viburnum tinus and its major compounds (viburtinoside I, II/III) were evaluated on spontaneous locomotor activity in mice and on isolated rabbit jejunum. V. tinus and its components reduced spontaneous activity in mice, viburtinoside I being more potent than viburtinoside II/III. The isolated compounds also had spasmolytic action in vitro, viburtinosides II/III being more potent than viburtinoside I. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
