Security issues of big data applications served by mobile operators

Abstract

Big explosion of data is a continuing trend and growing exponentially inside telecommunication providers' networks. Exploitation of big data, on the other hand, can also generate significant financial gains to mobile network operators (MNOs) across different sectors. In future 5G networks, telecom service providers are willing to cooperate with vertical industries in order to utilize their own massive set of data for generating new revenue streams using big data applications. However, deploying those big data applications and providing services to these vertical industries inside MNOs brings additional security risks as well. In this paper, we study security issues of deploying big data applications inside the premises of MNOs. We also run an extensive vulnerability test on one of the big data application and show our key findings in terms of security risks.
