Abstract

AbstractIn an e‐commerce transaction both the user and the provider of the service have expectations regarding the security of the transaction. These are authentication of those involved in the communication; confidentiality of the information exchanged in the communication; and integrity of the information exchanged in the communication. A secure communication channel will meet these expectations. This chapter provides an understanding of how the Secure Sockets Layer Protocol (SSL) and its variation Transport Layer Security Protocol (TLS) can be used to set up, maintain, and use a secure channel. This secure channel may be used for e‐commerce as well as secure communication. In addition, a discussion of SSL's strengths and weakness is presented and alternatives are suggested.
