Abstract

The model of dynamic capture proposed by Bailey based on the elliptic restricted three-body problem is examined in the light of eccentricity variations in the orbits of the primaries. It is found that good agreement between theory and observations for the case of the outer satellites of Jupiter is obtained when the current orbital eccentricity of Jupiter is used, but this agreement does not follow from most past conditions. The current orbits do fall within the predicted limits. The implication for a purely capture origin for these satellites is discussed.
