Abstract
The secretion of lithium in parotid saliva has been investigated in 13 manic depressive patients after 3 months therapy and in 12 patients after 20 months therapy with lithium carbonate (Priadel). Lithium was concentrated in saliva up to four times the plasma level. No significant effect on salivary flow rate was observed. There was a positive linear correlation ( r = 0.52, p < 0.0005) between the concentrations of lithium in unstimulated parotid saliva and serum. A significant multiple correlation was demonstrated between parotid lithium clearance and serum lithium and the reciprocal of the salivary flow rate. There was a significant difference between the correlations in the two groups of patients. The parotid salivary secretion of lithium (a) varies with the duration of administration (b) resembles that of potassium but also shows significant differences from that cation.
