Abstract

The role of the heart as an endocrine gland has become an expanding field of research in vertebrates, but until recently there has been no suggestion that the hearts of insects might also be secretory. This paper shows that the hearts of Calpodes (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae) and Rhodnius (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) are like those of vertebrates in having a structure appropriate for secretion through the rough endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi complex secretory vesicle pathway, giving a structural basis for the finding that larval Calpodes hearts synthesize several haemolymph polypeptides and secrete them in vitro into culture media.
