Abstract

The number of Chemical Abstracts' workers has passed the 2100 mark. These workers are scattered all over the world. With high interest and faithful service, they provide one of the finest examples of cooperative effort in science. Belief in the usefulness of CA is a prevailing incentive. There has long been a family spirit in the group. This group of workers tends to remain in the CA work during long periods of time. Perhaps two thirds of the abstracting is done by one third of the workers rich in experience from many years of abstracting. The three section editors who died with their CA boots on during 1958 (W. L. Badger, Edward Bartow, and D. J. Demorest) had served a total of 136 years, without pay. J. K. Dale and C. L. Mantell, section editors who found it best to give up their CA work during the past year, had served faithfully and well for a total of 70 years.
