Abstract

A consistent theory of the second-order wave forces acting on a horizontal cylinder in irregular waves is presented. Second-order boundary conditions imposed on body and free surface are exactly taken into account. One emphasis in this study is placed on the treatment of the second-order free surface condition which oscillates with the difference of wave numbers of two regular waves and never decay even at infinity. Free surface integral method is applied for obtaining second-order forces, in which asymptotic solutions of the first- and second-order quantities are effectively used. The results of calculations are discussed in comparison with experiments. in regular and bichromatic waves show good agreements with experiments.
