Abstract

The tensor components of the molecular first hyperpolarizability of 3,6-dinitro-9-ethylcarbazole and 3-nitro-9-ethylcarbazole have been analyzed with hyper-Rayleigh scattering and electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation. We show that measurements of the depolarization ratio give information directly about the importance of the off-diagonal molecular tensor components.
