Abstract

Recent data on helix-coil equilibrium parameters obtained from short peptides with defined sequences are reviewed and compared with the parameters obtained by the ‘guest-host’ technique from random copolymers. The effects of position of the amino acid residue in a short peptide as well as side chain-side chain interactions are considered. The physical nature of the helix-forming tendencies of different amino acids is discussed.
