Abstract

A general purpose metastable surface-detector is described which incorporates a novel design feature for focusing ejected secondary electrons from the surface into a channel electron multiplier. The primary aim of the detector is to improve the efficiency of metastable species detection; different surfaces (e.g., Hf, Be - Cu and lead-silicate glass) have been used to illustrate the variation in detector efficiency when detecting the same molecular species, for example .
