Abstract
This chapter considers secondary analysis and official statistics, which analyse data collected by others. Secondary analysis of data can be collected by other researchers or other organizations in the course of business and this puts the comparative element into the research design. Moreover, secondary analysis of existing data offers the prospect of exploring research questions of interest to the researcher without having to personally go through the process of collecting the data. The chapter then considers the analysis of official statistics, which involves unease about the reliability and validity of certain types of official data. It notes the notion that official statistics and big data are forms of unobtrusive methods.
