Abstract
The eukaryotic plant pathogen Phytophthora encodes conserved effector proteins to eliminate host secondary siRNAs. In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Hou etal. (2019) report that reduction in secondary siRNA levels renders the host hypersusceptible to Phytophthora and plant secondary siRNAs likely serve as trans-species defensive molecules against pathogens.
