Abstract
Abstract Editor's Note. This is, we believe, the first publication of this text. Dame Daphne du Maurier (1907–1989) was the author of The Infernal World of Branwell Bronte published by Victor Gollancz in 1960. Winifred Gerin's Branwell Bronte: a biography was published by Hutchinson the following year and seems to have been the occasion for this brief essay (which is undated). The typescript is in the possession of Mr Kenneth Butterfield, to whom we give our thanks. Ken's late wife, Mary, was a friend of Daphne du Maurier and it was she who suggested to Mary that the history of the Heaton family would repay investigation. My thanks are also due to Carol O'Dwyer for editing the typescript. It is reproduced with the permission of Curtis Brown Ltd., London, on behalf of the Chichester Partnership, literary agents for the du Maurier estate.Readers will be pleased to note that in this 150th anniversary year of the death of Branwell, Penguin UK are reprinting The Infernal World of Branwell Bronte.
