Abstract

AbstractObservation of 35 term breech fetuses in the second stage of labor, demonstrated a 77% incidence of periodic fetal heart rate (FHR) decelerations, characterized by brisk onset and quick recovery. As head compression cannot be an important factor in such labors, the FHR changes are most probably caused by cord compression and its associated vagal reflex bradycardia. The high prevalence of such FHR changes underscores the need for continuous FHR monitoring of breech deliveries throughout the second stage of labor.
