Abstract

In contrast with recent large studies of computed tomographic (CT) colonography (virtual colonoscopy) for colon cancer screening that showed poor results using 2-dimensional techniques, the largest study of CT colonography reported excellent results using primarily 3-D imaging (Journal Watch Gastroenterology Dec 16 2003). In the current study, researchers evaluated 3-D CT colonography in 288 high-risk patients with personal or family histories of colorectal polyps or cancer who were scheduled for same-day CT colonography followed by colonoscopy. Colonoscopies were performed at an academic center by an attending physician (47%) or a supervised gastroenterology fellow (53%).
