Abstract

Cybernetics is one of those incredibly intriguing terms; when it comes to using it, however, one constantly fears to be treading on thin ice because any questions inquiring about its actual meaning can only be answered vaguely. That is why I will start out simply by asking Wikipedia: “Cybernetics (from ancient Greek κυβeρνήτης kybernetes = steersman) is defined by its founder, Norbert Wiener, as the study of control and communication in the animal and the machine. Cybernetics explores the basic concepts for the control and regulation of systems, irrespective of their origin. This makes such different fields like machines, humans or organizations comparable. It was developed in the 1940s by scientists from the most different disciplines, and it has since inspired diverse new fields of application.
