Abstract

Abstract 1. The efficient co-ordination of surveying and mapping in any country is dependent on the accurate determination of the position of a number of points on the earth's surface, referred to a common origin. Triangulation provides the most effective means of establishing these points. In Australia, the origin, on which all geographical and rectangular co-ordinates are based, is the meridian circle at the Sydney observatory. Its longitude is E. 151° 12′ 17″·85 and the latitude S. 33° 51′ 41″·1.
