Abstract

A second law analysis for an engine using fuels produced by Al-Doura Oil Refinery. The fuels used were the enhanced pool formulae (called S1 to S4). The engine performance and emission characteristics were studied both from first and second law point of view. Results showed improvement in most of the fuel properties like calorific value, sulfur content, ON, gum content and energy density. On the engine side, the brake power, thermal efficiency (and specific fuel consumption) and sulfur dioxide levels improved, while heat loss and NOx emissions increased. From second law analysis, it is clear that S1 grade showed the highest fuel and indicated work availability compared with others but at the cost of exergy destroyed as heat and entropy generation.
