Abstract

The distribution of second homes in Great Britain is non-random. Certain areas of the country have a disproportionate number of second homes in relation to primary dwellings. One such area, in Scotland, is the island of Arran. Through an examination of Valuation Rolls and a field survey, this study discusses the current situation on Arran, identifies a number of potential problems of second home expansion, and assesses the prospects for a continuation of the harmonious balance between permanent residents and second-home visitors in the immediate future.
