Abstract

This chapter deals mainly with methods of solving second-order homogeneous and nonhomogeneous linear equations with constant coefficients. The characteristic equation and its roots are shown to yield explicit solutions of homogeneous equations, whereas the methods of undetermined coefficients and variation of parameters are shown to be effective for nonhomogeneous equations. All techniques are extended to higher-order linear equations with constant coefficients. The chapter concludes with a discussion of existence and uniqueness.
