Abstract

Secchi disc disappearance depths have been determined in the northeastern Mediterranean Sea in the late summer and early autumn of two different years, and the distribution of surface water turbidity is described and compared to that recognised in ERTS imagery for the winter season. The distribution of the surface suspensions indicates a pattern of surface currents which, while conforming to that previously postulated for the offshore regions of the area, also indicates the existence of a quasi-permanent, cyclonic gyre in the Bay of Mersin, with convergence and divergence zones to the south of that Bay.
