Abstract

Researchers at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, Dan Diego, are conducting research to find ways to irrigate dry, unfarmable land through the direct use of seawater. With funds provided by the Foundation for Ocean Research, Peta Mudie and Walter Schmitt last October set up a special laboratory for seawater irrigation experiments. So far the two researchers have successfully grown ordinary table beets in full‐strength seawater, a solution containing 3.5% salt.
