Abstract

In the summer of 1918, the Allies were confronted with a series of German offensives, one of which appeared to threaten the capture of Paris. During this offensive, the inexperienced American Expeditionary Force (AEF) came to the aid of the French and British armies fighting to halt it. Although the United States’ arrival in France was a blessing to the Allies, they still had concerns about whether the untested US soldiers and Marines possessed the ability to conduct modern warfare. The following is an account of how the French army and its leadership used one US division, the US 2nd Infantry Division, to help allay those concerns while at the same time giving the division the experience it needed to fight the war in France.
