Abstract

Visibility degradation is one of the most noticeable effects of air pollution. Recent data collected during a series of aerosol characterization studies in New York City indicate a marked improvement in annual median visibility in this region since 1968. The improvement is due principally to improvements in winter median visibility, which is related to substantial reductions in pollutant emissions from local sources. Summer median visibility, related to aerosol transported from distant sources into the New York City region, has not improved. (3 graphs, 39 references, 1 table)
