Abstract

Summary Craig, A. J. F. K. 1978. Seasonal variations in the weights of Red Bishops, Redcollared Widows and Redshouldered Widows. Ostrich: 45:153-157. Mean monthly weights of the Red Bishop Euplectes orix, the Redcollared Widow E. ardens and the Redshouldered Widow E. axillaris were recorded over 21 months in Natal. Males of all three species were heaviest at the start of the breeding season. They then lost weight until the post-nuptial moult started, when there was a new increase. Winter weights were again lower. The maximum weights of females appeared to occur immediately prior to egg-laying. There might be a slight increase in weight during the post-nuptial moult, but only in the case of female Red Bishops were there any distinct seasonal trends in weight change.
