Abstract

A study of seasonal activity of the cambium in Tectona grandis L. f. has shown that the activity initiates in the first week of June, reaches a peak in July and then slowly declines. The length of fusiform cambial initials undergo considerable variations during the activity and dormancy of the cambium. The initiation of cambial activity is closely associated with the opening of the dormant foliar buds in the first week of May. Cambium is more active with high numbers of immature xylem and phloem elements from July to September when the trees are with mature foliage and flowers and dormant from January to April when leaves dry and defoliation takes place. The differentiation of xylem and phloem starts simultaneously and the number of their immature elements reach the maximum in July.
