Abstract

Summary Anatomy of wood of Ficus rumphii B lume and Streblus asper L our , shows that the vessel elements are relatively long in autumn (February–April) in both the species and wide from February–July in the former and April–November in the latter. The proportion of vessels is greater during the period of luxurious growth (May–September) in F. rumphii. However, the annual variation is not much profound in S. asper, though the vessels are relatively more in June, August and September. Mean length of fibres, both septate and non-septate, and their relative proportion in both species vary irregularly during the year. Short and narrow rays are more abundant during growth period whereas tall and broad rays are less frequent in these months.
