Abstract

Summary Endogenous levels of 2-cis-4-trans abscisic acid (ABA) in shoot bark and lateral vegetative buds of apple ( Malus domestica Borkh.) decreased during the winter. The predominant pathway of short-term metabolism of applied ABA in both tissues was to phaseic and dihydrophaseic acids. Innate bud dormancy declined during the winter; rapid bud burst induced by transfer to 25 °C occured when bud ABA content was minimal.
